As one of the largest botanic gardens in the United States, Denver Botanic Gardens has earned a reputation as a leading authority on Rocky Mountain horticulture. However, you’ll find much more then just indigenous plants here, as the Botanic Gardens features fauna from around the world.
Visitors can see outdoor exhibits such as the world-renowned Rock Alpine Garden with their assortment of plants from Africa. Or stroll through the Japanese, Water, Herb, Vegetable, Scripture or Water-Smart gardens. Meandering streams connect many of these areas with colorful water lilies perched atop pools of blue. The Tropical Botanica, a rainforest environment complete with banana trees, palm trees and even tropical mist, is the one area that seems to attract the most attention. It is an indoor conservatory that displays a variety of exotic vegetation from the far corners of our planet, featuring 15,000 species of plants, flowering orchids and bromeliads.
If you’re worried about keeping the children entertained, fear not. Denver Botanic Gardens is home to The Banyan Tree, a monstrous 65-year-old tree that has 3 layers of balconies and ladders built into it. It is located in the middle of Tropical Botanica. This indoor playpen will keep the kids occupied while you leisurely stroll through the grounds and soak in the serenity that the gardens emit.
The new Perennial Walk is also worth a look. It displays colorful combinations from spring to fall and provides intriguing textures and beautiful hues year-round, making this local favorite a garden for all seasons.
The gift shop and Helen Fowler Library offer gifts, live plants, decorative items and horticultural books and catalogs, and several seasonal events are planned throughout the year. |
