:: Description and Basic Information ::
Denver is home to one of only two full service mints in the country, with the other located in Philadelphia. It is also one of three institutions in the United States that serves as a gold reserve, the largest and most famous being Fort Knox. However, this is the only gold reserve that allows visitors.

The U.S. Mint is the largest producer of coins in the world, churning out between 14 and 20 billion each year. However, the mint does not produce any paper money. That task is left to the United States Bureau of Engraving and Printing.

The tour of the facilities are conducted on a first come, first serve basis. Tours begin every 15 or 20 minutes and last about 20 minutes as well. It is best to arrive early in the week and early in the day, as this will require a shorter wait, with the average being around an hour long. The mint is closed to the public for two weeks each summer for their annual audit. Prospective visitors can call ahead to find out when that will occur.

The U.S. Mint in Denver has been producing coins since the gold rush days of the 1860s, making it one of Denver’s oldest businesses. There is a gift shop inside selling an assortment of coin collectibles and souvenirs, and there is no photographing allowed inside the building.
